Not too long ago, the concept of sustainability was unheard of in Saudi Arabia. It became an important topic in the country only since 2016 when the government launched the Saudi Vision 2030 plan, which aimed to diversify the economy and reduce its dependence on oil, among other goals. One of the key areas of the plan was to address environmental issues, including waste management and sustainability.
The government recognized the importance of implementing sustainable practices to preserve the country's natural resources and protect the environment for future generations. Since then, Saudi Arabia has made significant efforts to promote sustainability in various sectors, such as energy, water, and transportation, as part of its commitment to achieving sustainable development. The Saudi National Center of Waste Management set a goal to divert 90% of industrial waste from landfills by 2040, and it has been working hard to achieve this target. This ambitious goal has required significant private and public investment in waste management infrastructure and the adoption of innovative technologies to increase recycling.
